It’s safe to say that WWE’s Battleground pay-per-view wasn’t the greatest of events the company has put together in recent times.

The Punjabi Prison match featuring Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton didn’t exactly go down as an all-time classic, and it’s now understandable why the structure wasn’t used in over a decade.

BATTLEGROUND

To make things even more confusing, The Great Khali returned for one night to help The Modern Day Maharaja retain his WWE Championship.

However, the one match fans have been talking about is Kevin Owens’ victory against AJ Styles where he reclaimed the United States Championship, following on from the surprising result we witnessed inside Madison Square Garden.

There have been several conflicting reports on what went down at Battleground; some are saying Vince McMahon ordered the finish to be changed mid-match, while others are saying the blame falls on The Phenomenal One’s shoulders.

When you consider Chris Jericho was returning, it probably made more sense that Vince ordered the change so he’d come back for Owens and not Styles. Then again, having Styles reclaim the gold just two nights later probably proves that Styles did botch the finish initially.

CONFUSION

Still, Owens rolled up Styles for a pin following a bump to the referee which left him dazed as he counted to three – but it was the hesitation from the referee for the third count which has left people wondering whether that was planned.

Now, a new report from Wrestling News Co has revealed how the current United States Champion reacted to the finish.

According to the source, Styles was said to be really unhappy with how things unfolded at Battleground, and it’s understandable why he would be.

The belief initially was that the change was made to the ending during the match, if that’s the case then Styles would have no reason to be upset over the botched finish because the outcome would have been the same anyway, with Owens leaving with the championship.

That means Styles was seen looking upset backstage because of the late call made by Vince, as opposed to the way the match ended with the hesitation from the referee, and it’s now why we have Shane McMahon officiating the match at SummerSlam between the pair.

Styles probably isn’t too upset now, though, as his resume will now state that he’s a two-time United States Champion, as opposed to just holding the gold on one occasion.
