When Gary Cahill stepped up to take Chelsea's first penalty against Arsenal in the Community Shield, viewers were left somewhat surprised by the decision.

The England international thumped his spot-kick past Petr Cech to make it 1-0 Chelsea, with Theo Walcott and Nacho Monreal then making it 2-1 Arsenal under the ABBA system.

However, when Thibaut Courtois lined up to take Chelsea's second penalty, fans couldn't believe what they were watching.

Goalkeepers rarely take penalties in shoot-outs, yet Antonio Conte gave Courtois the green light to be second taker.

What a mistake that proved to be.

Courtois, much to the delight of Arsenal fans, blazed his effort over the crossbar as if he was taking a goal kick. The angry expression on Conte's face when cameras panned onto him said it all.

Alvaro Morata then missed his own penalty to give Arsenal a golden opportunity to win the Community Shield - which they duly took advantage of.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud both produced marvellous finishes to secure Arsenal a convincing 4-1 victory in the shoot-out.

Courtois' embarrassing miss was the real story at Wembley, though, with Cech explaining that his former teammate may have changed his penalty style.

"We played together and we made a lot of challenges during the training session in the penalty shootout," he told BT Sport.

"This is not usually where he shoots, so this is probably why he missed because normally he buries it in the top corner on the other side, the way I went.

"So obviously, maybe the fact that we know each other and I know their players made it more difficult for them."

Football fans have since been questioning why Conte allowed Courtois to take a penalty for Chelsea, let alone be second in the queue.

Well, in a post-match interview, the Italian defended his decision by saying Courtois is usually one of his best penalty takers, and that's why he went second.

"Courtois is one of our best players to take a penalty," Conte said. "If a player shows you during training to be one of the best, you pick him."

Courtois may be one of Chelsea's best penalty kick takers, but by missing so early on, the Belgian's confidence was knocked, making it even harder to save Arsenal's spot-kicks.

If Conte wanted Courtois to take a penalty, perhaps he should have made him fourth taker and allowed one of David Luiz or Cesc Fabregas to go second.
