There have been a few transfer sagas this summer, but the one that is gathering the most pace as August begins to take shape is Liverpool's Phillipe Coutinho to Barcelona.

The Catalan side have always held an interest in the Brazilian playmaker, but it seems as though his compatriot Neymar's move to Paris Saint-Germain accelerated their interest.

They've already had a £78 million bid rejected, but with €222 million burning a hole in their pocket, it seems as though the Blaugrana have the means to truly test Liverpool's resolve.

However, boss Jurgen Klopp has remained adamant that Coutinho will not be sold and the player himself loves playing for the club.

It also emerged yesterday that the only club Coutinho would consider leaving Liverpool for is Barcelona and he would head to the Nou Camp if a deal could be struck 'amicably' with his current employers.

That seems doubtful, but according to Spanish outlet Marca, that doesn't mean Barca are not going to try.

According to the report, Barcelona officials are already in England and are hoping to strike a deal with Liverpool over the next few days.

They also know the price they are prepared to go to in order to secure the former Inter Milan man - £100m.

Could Liverpool resist such an offer? Every sign thus far has indicated that they will and legendary defender Jamir Carragher things they better or the fans could revolt.

"There'll be a riot if Coutinho went - against the owners, against the club. There will be.

"This transfer window hasn't gone how Liverpool would have wanted.

"They wanted Virgil van Dijk, they wanted Keita. Liverpool don't need money, they've got money.

"Jurgen Klopp hasn't spent anything really since he came in terms of net spend. There's a lot of money there for him to spend."

And Carragher would be right. Klopp had three big money targets at the start of the summer but only Mohammed Salah - the cheapest of the three at a sum of £35 million - has made his way to Merseyside.

Losing Coutinho on top of missing out on their targets would be a disastrous summer for the club.
