But aside from that, there was also the small issue of what happened the last time he played in a UEFA Super Cup match.

Back in August 2013, it was Lukaku who missed the decisive penalty for Chelsea in the shoot-out against Bayern Munich. This was a golden opportunity to exorcise his demons.

Unfortunately, though, Lukaku’s first-half performance against Zinedine Zidane’s men left a lot to be desired.

At the time of writing, the second half hasn’t taken place yet, and Lukaku may have scored a hat-trick for all we know, but right now he’s looked isolated and, dare we say it, a little lost out there.

Lukaku blasted on Twitter for 'braindead' moment

The former Everton star has received plenty of stick on social media for his performance during the opening 45 minutes, but there was one moment in particular that sparked some serious abuse.

Even Man Utd fans were tearing their hair out when this happened.

Ander Herrera read Toni Kroos’ risky pass and made the interception.

The Spanish midfielder then ran onto the ball and could have squared the ball to Lukaku, who would have found himself one-on-one with Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

However, Lukaku inexplicably ran over and took control of the ball, despite the fact he was in an offside position.

The assistant referee raised his flag and United’s chance was gone.
