Real Madrid proved too hot to handle as they swept aside Manchester United 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup.Madrid, who claimed their second Super Cup in as many years, had the game in control thanks to their German central midfield maestro.Toni Kroos helped his side to a 63% share of possession with almost double the amount of team passes. However, it’s the 27-year-old’s individual statistics that have put every Manchester United player to shame.

Kroos lost the ball just three times and maintained a 96% pass accuracy.

To put that into perspective, he completed at least 30 more passes than his opposition midfield, which included the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Andre Herrera.

Kroos even found time to laugh at Romelu Lukaku over his perceived lack of offside-rule knowledge.

Matic and Herrera’s anchoring roles gave added freedom to Pogba in attack, although he was one player who did little to impress the BT Sport panel.

In particular, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard hit out over the France International’s first-half performance.

“I think he’s been poor,” Gerrard said on BT Sport. “If we’re being brutally honest I think his decision making out there in the first half hasn’t been good.

“Here he does well cutting in but he has to slide (Henrikh) Mkhiatryan in for a chance on goal.

“Here he gambles to come out and header the ball away, gets underneath it, it could have been another goal for Real Madrid.

“Here he is a bit selfish, goes for the shot when I think he could have played it to Mkhitaryan again.”

“I think he’s been a bit individual out there rather than thinking of his team-mates in the first 45.”
