Gareth Bale put his skills on show to potential suitors as Real Madrid beat Manchester United 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup last night. With the absence of Cirstiano Ronaldo from the starting lineup, Bale looked to lead Madrid’s charge to their first silverware of the season. The Welsh winger interchanged nicely with Isco for Madrid’s second goal, as the latter slotted the ball home calmly, however he was accused of missing a guilt-edged chance in the second half, before his substitution 12 minutes later.Regardless of his performance, United manager Jose Mourinho has always been a keen admirer of Bale, as reported by The Telegraph.“If he’s not in the club’s plans and what you are writing is true, that the arrival of another player then Gareth would be on his way out of Real Madrid, I would try to be waiting for him on the other side and be fighting with the other coaches who would like to have him on their team,” Mourinho said. However, the same can’t be said for former Manchester United player Paul Scholes. The ex-England international has questioned the 28-year-old’s fitness following rumours of a potential Premier League return for the former Tottenham player.“The lad has got amazing talent, we know that,” Said Scholes, speaking to BT Sport.
“He’s got a brilliant physique, he's quick, he's strong and he should be right up there with (Cristiano) Ronaldo.
"But the reason he's not at the minute is that the lad just can't stay fit.
"I can't remember the last time he played a full season. He misses so much football it's untrue and when you think of Ronaldo and Messi, they play every week.
"They've played every week for the last 10 years. If Gareth's going to get to that level he needs to just stay fit.”
MAKE OR BREAK FOR BALE
Bale faces a make-or-break season at the Bernabeu, according to Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Terry Gibson.
Bale endured an injury-plagued La Liga campaign last season, featuring in 27 matches across all competitions. With reports linking the club with a move for Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe, Bale’s future under manager Zinedine Zidane could be in question.
"It is a massive year for Bale, I would say it is almost make or break for Bale at Real Madrid," Gibson said in the La Liga Weekly podcast.
