The Premier League finally returns this weekend, and while that will please all football fans, one man who isn't happy with his current situation is Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutchman has developed into a fine defender since his move from Celtic to Southampton in 2015, but he handed in a transfer request earlier this week.

Van Dijk has been left frustrated at Southampton's refusal to listen to offers for him throughout the summer, with the Saints even forcing Liverpool to apologise for an "illegal approach".

The 26-year-old was a top transfer target for Jurgen Klopp's side, and he has also attracted interest from Chelsea, Manchester City and, most recently, Arsenal.

Chelsea have enjoyed far more success that Liverpool in recent times, but one Reds legend has explained why Van Dijk might prefer a move to Anfield over Stamford Bridge.

Why Van Dijk may prefer Liverpool to Chelsea

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher spent his entire career at the club, playing 737 games and winning 11 trophies, including the Champions League.

Whilst other former players have warned Liverpool about going back in for Van Dijk, the former centre-back has claimed that Merseyside may be the most attractive option.

"Chelsea have been a lot more successful than Liverpool over the past 10 years," the 39-year-old told new Sky Sports show The Debate, via Liverpool Echo.

"They are the champions and there’s the massive pull of living in London and, at this moment, Chelsea are a better team than Liverpool. But if I was him, I’d have a look at how Chelsea set up in that back three.

"It looks to me like you’d have him (Van Dijk) as the middle man, where David Luiz played so well last season. I don’t see either of them playing the wide centre-back position."

The 39-year-old continued: “I think with Liverpool, the thing would be you could go there and be the man who took Liverpool back to winning trophies.

"People talk about the league but Liverpool have only won one trophy in 10 or 12 years. That’s nowhere near good enough. Can you be part of something starting under Jurgen Klopp?”

Do Liverpool still want Van Dijk?

The Netherlands international, who has stated his ambition to play European football at the highest level, would reportedly cost suitors £60 million.

Despite Van Dijk angling for a move away from St Mary's, it's no guarantee that he will actually get his wish in this transfer window, especially after Klopp's recent comments.

Regarding his defensive options, the German said, via BBC: "We have four (centre-backs). I don't think we need more. In the moment I'm fine."

"We are open until 31 August. We cannot force things, and we would never get a centre-back 'just because."

Van Dijk's future remains incredibly unclear and it's anyone's guess as to where the talented Dutchman will be playing his football come September.
