It's something of a ritual for NBA players to work out together during the offseason, often in groups in places like Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

LeBron James most recently had a workout group going that included Derrick Rose, Eric Bledsoe, Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook in Sin City. Star players banding together to get in a great offseason run of training isn't uncommon, but it is a bit curious if you think about it.

Wouldn't a focused workout over an extended period of time allow an NBA player's competition to have a better idea about their strengths and weaknesses? Don't expect to see Anthony Davis' name in a workout group for these exact reasons.

Davis spoke with NBA.com's Jim Eichenhofer and was asked why he's not buddying up with LeBron or other NBA stars during the summer. His response is perfect and revealing of just how competitive he is while other stars seem to write-off the significance of working with the opposition.

"Why would you? They’ll know what you’re going to do," Davis told Eichenhofer

Davis is laser-focused on an incredibly important season for the Pelicans. DeMarcus Cousins was brought in to be the tag team partner Davis desperately needed on a New Orleans team that's been bereft of talent for years, and it's time to deliver results.

"We know what we’re doing, especially having an entire training camp with me, Cousins, Jrue [Holiday], [Rajon] Rondo, and all these guys we have on our team, we feel like we have a shot against anybody. That’s our mindset coming in. We’re not worried about all the white noise and what other people are saying, more so what we’ve got to do in the locker room and on the court together," Davis said.

The Pelicans have made the playoffs just one time since Davis was selected as the No. 1 pick by the franchise, but the team is hopeful that changes with a revamped roster and more time to grow together for their superstar frontcourt. That's an important piece for their future with Cousins looking at unrestricted free agency next summer.

Cousins has yet to see the posteason, and a trip to the playoffs may help the pitch from New Orleans going forward. It's clear that Davis is completely locked in as the leader of his team, and when it comes to competition, he's not cutting any corners.
