With the Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor super-bout only weeks away, news has broken that Mayweather has submitted a request to be allowed to use 8oz gloves when the two take the ring in Las Vegas.

The 49-0 superstar submitted the necessary waiver to the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) only hours before the given deadline.

The NAC has said that it was expecting such a request to be submitted by the Mayweather camp before the deadline after the American posted a photo to his personal Instagram with the caption: "I'll be wearing 8oz gloves."

According to the NAC rules, 10oz gloves are to be used in bouts from 135lbs and up, but fights between 135lbs and 147lbs using 8oz gloves can be sanctioned if waivers are signed and the NAC feels the move is justified.

Lighter gloves theoretically lead to more brutal punches, so this move from Mayweather, who has been outspoken about his loss of power as his career has gone on, makes sense.

However, even for a fight of this magnitude, at 154lbs, it looks very unlikely that the NAC will sanction the change to 8oz gloves judging by the recent comments of Bob Bennett, the executive director of the commission, who said he had never seen a move to 8oz at this weight before.

"Even if they are both in agreement, our number one policy is the health and safety of the fighters," said Bennett.

"To deviate from our regulations at a difference of 7lbs would be for the chairman and commissioners to determine."

McGregor, who has used 4oz gloves throughout his UFC career, welcomed Mayweather's Instagram post with open arms, saying: "I am coming sprinting at you with bricks. Know that. Brittle hands."

The matter will be debated by the NAC publicly before they announce their decision.

As fight night edges closer, the anticipation grows and grows.
