Liverpool will look back on the summer transfer window so far as a rather rough one compared to their Premier League rivals.

The Reds wrapped up three signings relatively early on with Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke and Andrew Robertson arriving for a little over £45 million.

A trio of departures also bid farewell to Anfield in Lucas Leiva, Kevin Stewart and Andre Wisdom, adding roughly £11 million to the club bank account.

Jurgen Klopp can only be frustrated at the lack of marquee additions to his squad after his chase for Red Bull Leipzig midfielder and top transfer target Naby Keita reached a dead end.

The 2017-18 season is shaping up to be a difficult one for Liverpool unless they manage to land several reinforcements for the window shuts on August 31.

But the arrival of new players can only do so much for the team if the club fails to retain the services of their one indispensable man – Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian has been the subject of a fierce pursuit by Barcelona since they lost Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record deal.

The Catalan pocketed an eye-watering £200 million from the transfer, giving them plenty of cash to put towards securing an adequate replacement.

IMPROVED OFFER

Liverpool have reportedly turned down an improved offer of £90 million from Barcelona with Klopp adding that no price would justify letting of his star playmaker.

However, the unique lure of the Nou Camp has often swayed players to create a situation in which their club is nearly powerless to keep hold of them.

Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is a manager who became familiar with such a feeling when Luis Suarez left him for Barcelona in 2014.

With the red half of Merseyside fearful that a similar scenario could be brewing with Coutinho, the 44-year-old has offered his take on how the saga could play out.

“Philippe Coutinho is a world-class player but the power in the position is with Liverpool,” Rodgers said after Alan Tate’s testimonial match at Swansea, per the Daily Post.

“Phil has signed a new contract. He’s always going to have other clubs that want him.

“But Liverpool don’t have to sell him if they don’t want to. So the power is very much with them.

“Liverpool’s a fantastic club and I know he really enjoys it there.

“He’s got great supporters and a great manager, so I’m sure he would be very happy there.”

Rodgers – now a treble-winning boss at Celtic – should offer some hope to Liverpool fans if they're unmoved by what Klopp has already said.

Barcelona are unlikely to give up the chase until the window officially shuts, though, giving them plenty of time to steer proceedings into their favour.
