A report in Spanish outlet Sport from last month detailed just how impressive Lionel Messi looked for Barcelona in their pre-season tests.

They claimed the Argentinian ‘destroyed’ the GPS he wore during Barça’s friendly against Juventus, reaching new levels in terms of kilometres run, acceleration, top speed, speed over 20 metres, aerobic capacity and other areas.

It’s scary to think that Messi could be even better this season considering he’s played at an outrageous level for an entire decade.

The 30-year-old will have to do it without Neymar this campaign after the Brazilian’s €222 million move to Paris Saint-Germain, but Chelsea winger Willian doesn’t believe his compatriot can overtake Messi as the world’s best for a few more years.

"Messi, Neymar or Ronaldo? The three of them are exceptional, they have a lot of quality and they have their differences. I like all three, but I think Messi will still be the best of the world a few more times," Willian told Goal.

"I know Cristiano Ronaldo is close to winning another one Ballon d'Or, but I really like Messi's style. I really like Neymar too, but I really like Messi."

Willian arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2013, one year after the Blues played Messi and Barcelona in the semi-final of the Champions League.

Drogba's story about Messi

And Didier Drogba, who scored the winning penalty against Bayern Munich in the final, revealed a brilliant story about just how Messi’s goal record left him in disbelief.

“Robbie Di Matteo did what he always did and put up a list of the opposing team's top scorers,” Drogba wrote.

“Usually, the list would read something along the lines of Rooney - 22 goals; Van Persie - 15 and so on. When the Barcelona list went up, sure enough, in third place was Xavi on 14, in equal second place were Alexis Sánchez and Cesc Fàbregas on 15, but we all just laughed when the top scorer came up on the screen - Lionel Messi on ... 63 goals, 14 in the Champions League alone!

“But 63 that season? It was such a ridiculous figure that we looked at each other in disbelief and laughed - what else could we do? I even took a picture of the number because it was so outrageous.”

Chelsea needn’t have worried. Messi, who hasn’t scored in eight matches against Chelsea, was helpless to prevent Barça going down 3-2 on aggregate in a thrilling encounter.
