Legendary heavyweight boxer Larry Holmes believes that Conor McGregor can do what others have failed to do before him and defeat Floyd Mayweather, who currently sits on a 49-0 record.

Holmes himself won 69 of his 75 fights during his career, which included a victory over the man dubbed "The Greatest" Muhammad Ali in 1980.

He dominated Ali from the first bell until his trainer Angelo Dundee was forced to throw in the towel to stop Ali taking any more punishment from Holmes.

Holmes allegedly cried following his victory as he idolised The People's Champion Ali.

Holmes became the lineal heavyweight king after being the only man able to stop him.

Holmes, who is now 67, has made various comebacks, one as recently as 2002, when he fought as a 52-year-old.

He believes that McGregor has been overlooked by boxing fans, who see the August 26 fight as a mismatch.

But, Holmes thinks Mayweather's legendary defensive style is beatable.

He told the Bald Faced Truth radio show: "He's [Mayweather] going to tie him up and try to hit him on the break. McGregor has got to put his hands up, stay right on top of him and keep him from hitting him. It's going to be an interesting fight."

He continued: "Don't sell McGregor short. He doesn't have to do too much to win.

"All he has to do is get him in the corner and bang him. Put his hands up over his head, get down low, keep coming in and throw punches once you get him against the ropes."

McGregor himself and his camp are allegedly confident, and Holmes finished by saying: "People are selling [McGregor] short. This guy is an athlete. He sees a lot of money, and he sees a medal on his chest if he can get over this hump"

If one of boxing's greatest fighters thinks McGregor has a chance, maybe it's time boxing fans begin to take the Irish UFC legend more seriously.
