Kelvin Davis returns to the Southampton starting line-up for the visit of south-coast rivals Brighton.

The goalkeeper was rested for Wednesday night's Johnstone's Paint Trophy win over Charlton and will reclaim his place at the expense of understudy Bartosz Bialkowski.

Midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin will be checked over after suffering a knock which forced him off at half-time.

Wayne Thomas celebrated a rare start with his first goal in more than four years and could keep his place either at centre-half or right-back, where he played the second half after Lloyd James moved into midfield.

Graeme Murty (knee) remains the only injury absentee and is due back in training next week, while Kayne McLaggon has joined Eastbourne Borough on loan.

Dean Hammond and Dan Harding will line up against the club where they began their careers.

Gavin Hoyte is ruled out of Gus Poyet's first game in charge of Brighton.

The right-back misses the final match of his initial month-long loan spell from Arsenal through suspension.

Andrew Whing has made a timely return to fitness following a hernia operation and is the ready-made replacement for Hoyte.

Poyet also has Arron Davies and Liam Dickinson available after both missed last week's 4-4 FA Cup draw against Wycombe.

Winger Davies was denied permission to play by parent club Nottingham Forest and striker Dickinson was axed for disciplinary reasons.

Midfielder Kevin McLeod is expected to shake off a knock so defenders Jim McNulty (ankle) and Colin Hawkins (heel) are the only injury absentees.
