Pirates end poor run

Published Add your comment

Late goals from Jeff Hughes and Chris Lines completed a stirring fightback as Bristol Rovers ended a run of six straight defeats with a 3-2 win over Carlisle.

Lines bundled home the winner from an injury-time corner to send the Pirates fans into ecstasy after Hughes had equalised with a measured left-footed chip after 83 minutes.

The visitors were given a 20th-minute lead when Ian Harte volleyed in Graham Kavanagh's corner but Jo Kuffour fired home a 34th minute equaliser from close range.

Rovers looked to be heading for a seventh successive defeat when Richard Keogh headed in after 71 minutes but Hughes and Lines ensured it was the hosts who secured the points.

Carlisle will feel hard done by after looking the better side for long periods and will feel they should have taken at least a point.

Rovers were indebted to goalkeeper Mikkel Andersen for two early saves from Vincent Pericard and the Carlisle striker will feel he should have scored on both occasions.

Rovers again showed defensive frailty but can breath a sigh of relief to end their dismal run.
