Clive Platt scored a late equaliser to earn Colchester a 2-2 draw with Exeter.
The Grecians coped better with the rain-sodden pitch in the first half and were almost ahead inside the opening minute when Stuart Fleetwood inexplicably hit the post from four yards.
Marc Tierney then cleared Fleetwood's close-range effort off the line but the former Cardiff City trainee made no mistake in the sixth minute when he latched onto Marcus Stewart's pass to slot home.
However Colchester were back on level terms four minutes before half-time when Platt headed in Tierney's cross.
Exeter then regained their lead in the opening minute of first-half stoppage-time through Ryan Harley, who curled a delightful 25-yard free-kick into the top corner.
Colchester enjoyed more of the possession in the second half and finally levelled when Platt ran onto substitute Steven Gillespie's pass and finished smartly.
U's substitute Medy Elito was then shown a straight red card for a lunge on Bertie Cozic as the spoils were shared.
