A late Adam Boyd goal sunk his former club Leyton Orient as Hartlepool moved into play-off contention with a 1-0 win.

Pools brought Boyd back to Victoria Park in the summer for #80,000 and with eight minutes remaining he grabbed a vital touch to divert a deep Colin Larkin cross into the net.

The home side went close in the 32nd minute when James Brown sliced a left-foot shot into the side netting and 10 minutes later Larkin tapped a huge Scott Flinders goal-kick wide.

Hartlepool continued to dominate after the break and Andy Monkhouse fed Brown but he fired straight at Glenn Morris before the Orient keeper pulled off a superb one-handed save to keep out Monkhouse's curling effort.

Boyd thought he had scored with 58 minutes gone but his close-range strike was blocked superbly by Ben Chorley.

Orient's best chance came when Scott McGleish sent an angled volley at goal which Flinders stood up to firmly.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw but Boyd popped up late on to seal all three points for Hartlepool.
