Addressing the Diego Costa situation was never going to be an easy task, but signing Alvaro Morata isn’t exactly a bad way to go about it.

Chelsea’s new £68 million transfer screams out with the old, in with the new. Morata has arrived with a view to replacing his compatriot, with a comparable goal scoring record and none of the emotional baggage.

The Spaniard was even chased by Manchester United early in the summer and amassed 20 goals last term at Real Madrid, despite restricted game time.

That being said, the pressure riding on his shoulders this season will be nothing short of immense. Morata will have to deal with the responsibility of leading the line of the champions and inevitable comparisons to Romelu Lukaku.

And while just two pre-season games and the Community Shield can only tell you so much, the 24-year-old is yet to inspire in a Chelsea shirt.

This was no more the case than under the Wembley arch against Arsenal last week, a fixture that ended in defeat for the Blues. Morata was snubbed in favour of Michy Batshuayi but entered the fray for the final 15 minutes.

Similarly to his pre-season outings, though, the forward failed to make an impact as the game trundled on to penalties.

Naturally, as an accomplished finisher, Morata stepped up for Chelsea’s third spot kick after Thibaut Courtois had missed the target. However, the Spaniard suffered the same fate, screwing his effort wide to set-up Arsenal for the win.

It’s an uneasy start to life in England and one that has prompted the player to concede that critics are already getting to him.

Speaking to Marca, he admitted: “I have had only two pre-season games, 15 competitive minutes and a missed penalty... and they're already killing me, so I know what's ahead.

“It is the price that must be paid for such a large transfer. And it's something that motivates me and makes me work harder every day, to spend an hour every day in the Sports City training. I know twice as many people are paying attention to me."

Nevertheless, the 24-year-old has a plan to ensure the haters are silenced and as soon as possible. He concluded: “I want to score more than 20. It's my job.

“But it is not an obsession for me ahead of winning titles for the team. For example, when I was with Juventus I did not score more than 20 goals.

“But I won all the titles except for the Champions League. I have scored 15 or 16 goals and won titles. And other strikes have scored 35 and not won anything.”
