Even the most committed of Conor McGregor fans have to admit; Floyd Mayweather is the favourite ahead of their fight on August 26.

Notorious may be 11 years younger than his American opponent but the bottom line is that he has never boxed as a professional. It is McGregor; after all, that is turning his back on his own sport for the occasion.

Meanwhile, Mayweather is undoubtedly one of the greatest ever to step in the ring. Money even has a 49-0 professional record to prove it and can usurp Rocky Marciano in the record books with a win this month.

It begs the question as to whether McGregor actually stands a chance.

If you deem the words of defector Paulie Malignaggi as truth as opposed to bitterness, then his hopes certainly don’t stand strong. The Irishman’s mural may remain the only image of him knocking out Mayweather.

All that considered, you would think that Money would be entering the fight with unbridled confidence. That, however, is not the case.

The 40-year-old has been surprisingly pessimistic ahead of the bout, in blatant contradiction to his demeanor in the recent press conferences.

This was no more the case in an interview with ESPN, where he conceded: "I'm not the same fighter I was two years ago. I'm not the same fighter I was five years ago. I lost a step.”

His comments even went as far as suggesting McGregor had the edge in a fight he’s tipped to be slaughtered in. Moreover, Mayweather has been at it again with his latest prediction.

It seems the American is fearful of the match going the distance; a concern augmented by the fact Mayweather hasn’t won by KO since 2011.

At his media workout, he explained: "He believes it's not going past four and I believe that it's not going to go the distance at all.

"He feels one way, I feel another way, we are both confident in our skills and we'll just have to see.

"It is a victory for him. If it goes the distance, it's a victory for him - in my eyes also."

So, a crisis of confidence or simply mind games?

You’d probably put your money on the latter but repeating such pessimism certainly raises questions. Mayweather is considered such an overwhelming favourite that there is no doubt that defeat would rattle him.

It would, after all, be quite spectacular for Money to lose his unblemished record against a man who isn’t even strictly a boxer.
