Gabriel Jesus hit the ground running at Manchester City last season.

Having arrived as another Brazilian starlet looking to cut it in Europe, excitement and skepticism were high in equal measure. Nevertheless, any doubts were erased when only the linesman’s flag denied him the perfect start against Tottenham.

There were no such discrepancies beyond his debut with the 20-year-old going on to garner seven goals in 11 appearances. He proved a more than capable alternative to Sergio Aguero when the opportunity presented itself.

Inevitably, though, Jesus now faces the question as to whether he was simply a one season – or rather four month – wonder.

Pre-season has offered mixed signals but ultimately positive ones. Jesus was a constant threat in the 4-1 bludgeoning of Real Madrid, scored against West Ham but attracted some unwanted publicity versus Spurs for an open goal miss.

Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, only so much can go wrong, however.

Furthermore, the 20-year-old is calling upon some star-studded contacts as means of improving his game. It is, after all, important to keep adapting before Premier League defences get the hang of his style.

And as far as sources of advice go, few come better than Ballon d’Or winners or, even better, a man with two.

The man in question is Ronaldo, the original one that is. He recently paid tribute to Jesus too, admitting: “When I see him, I am reminded of my own past.”

When reminded of this very compliment in an interview with the Daily Mail, Jesus spoke more about their relationship and their texts.

The Manchester City man explained: “We speak a lot and I know now that, if I ever have any doubts or questions, I can ask. I'm very proud about that. He was the best player I ever saw.”

Arguably, Ronaldo’s advice will never prove more important. Jesus is just days away from the season that could make or break his Premier League career and the latest World Cup is on the horizon.

Brazil currently sit at the top of the FIFA World Rankings and will be going into the tournament in Russia as one of the favourites. Moreover, Jesus has played a large role in this with five goals in his seven caps so far.

He will be hoping to earn his place in the team alongside stars such as Neymar to try and avenge the ignominy with which the 2014 campaign concluded.

And Ronaldo is the perfect man to ask as regards the World Cup, having won twice and procured the Golden Boot. Give those texts a thorough read, Gabriel.
