For the first time in Arsene Wenger's 21-year tenure, Arsenal will not play Champions League football this season.

As a result, the Gunners have been active in the transfer window, bringing in Sead Kolasinac on a free and breaking their club-record fee for Alexandre Lacazette.

Arsenal have shown interest in a number of forwards, including Monaco duo Thomas Lemar and Kylian Mbappe, and another man they've been linked with is Riyad Mahrez.

The 2015-16 PFA Player of the Year was outstanding as Leicester City pulled off a remarkable title triumph and still registered ten goals last term as the Foxes finished in 12th place.

Ahead of Arsenal's Premier League opener against Leicester, Wenger has revealed why he didn't make an approach to sign Mahrez this summer.

Wenger reveals why Arsenal didn't sign Mahrez

The 67-year-old manager was asked about his interest in Algerian international Mahrez on Thursday, where he admitted that he likes the 26-year-old as a player.

"We were never close (to a deal for Mahrez)," Wenger claimed during his pre-match press conference, via The Independent.

“I rate him as a player, but we have similar types with Alex Iwobi, Mesut Ozil and now Jack Wilshere back. We have plenty of the same type of player.”

Will Mahrez leave this summer?

The 2017-18 campaign may be up and running in England, but that doesn't mean that Mahrez won't have left Leicester by the time the transfer window shuts.

On the back of his 18-goal and title-winning season, the tricky winger opted to stay at the King Power for at least one more year as they embarked on their Champions League adventure.

Mahrez agreed a new four-year deal last summer but is believed to be keen on a move away from Leicester, with Italian clubs Inter Milan and Roma interested.

The latter have reportedly had an offer for Mahrez turned down by Leicester, but Wenger's latest comments suggest that Arsenal were never serious about their efforts to sign him.
