Manchester United kicked the season off with a home game against West Ham on Sunday and Jose Mourinho will have been delighted with their first half showing.

The Red Devils generally controlled proceedings and went in with a 1-0 lead at half time through new £75 million Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku.

New signing Nemanja Matic also took to the field while Victor Lindelof took his place on the bench with Phil Jones favoured over the £40 million Swede.

Lukaku always seemed to score against the Hammers during his Everton days and United fans were delighted that the former Chelsea man continued that trend on Sunday.

Old Trafford wasn't always a happy place at half-time last season with plenty of scoreless first halfs, but Lukaku managed to change the entire mood in Manchester.

However, without new boy Matic, Lukaku would not have been able to enjoy his first ever league goal for United.

The Serbian midfielder won the ball back in the midfield - exactly why Mourinho purchased him from his old club Chelsea - and then fed the ball to Rashford.

From there, the England wonderkid surged forward, Matic made a run on the outside before slipping the ball in for Lukaku who had run along the line. From there, he made no mistake:

Ahead of the game, boss Mourinho said he believed he finally had 'his' team at Old Trafford and expected big things for the season ahead.

He said: “In many ways, it is my team. In terms of the squad, this is my second transfer window. I was thinking, three transfer windows, I need that. But after two windows I have a good group and a football club much better equipped.

“We are much better organised in the areas that support the first-team squad. We are much better organised at every level.

“So we will go for it this season. We are going to try to win the title.

“We are going to try to give a hard fight to the top teams in Europe in the Champions League. And I always had respect and the desire to do well in the English cups and I always liked to go to the finals.
