After picking up just nine home wins last term, Mourinho's men were eager to avoid falling into the same trap this time around as Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba punished Slaven Bilic's injury-hit side with a third and fourth once Lukaku's brace had set the Red Devils on their way.

But it was Matic's performance that really caught the eye.

The summer signing from Chelsea looked composed on the ball and equally effective without it in a man of the match display.

"The Premier League taught me that you need to be adaptive to perform immediately. Both Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic have years and years of Premier League experience, it is easy for them compared to Victor Lindelof who needs time," Mourinho said after the final whistle.

“Nemanja is top player with a top stability and we need that. Romelu is aggressive so they improve our team and the way we work. We have conditions to be a better team this season than last season.

"Romelu can gives us aerial threat, protect the ball and a good way out for us. I repeat, we are not on the moon but it is a good start. I enjoyed the confidence levels."

Although there were plenty of highlights from Matic's first appearance at the Theatre of Dreams, one particular moment left his new supporters drooling - and maybe a little bit surprised.

Man United supporters knew they were getting a reliable holding midfielder who could break up play in the form of Matic but they weren't expecting him to go past three or four players down the wing.

Yet that is exactly what happened during the first 45 minutes.

As you can see in the video below, when pressurised by three Hammers' defenders, the 29-year-old pulled off a silky piece of skill to get away from all of them.

Not content with that, he took it past one more for good measure.

It had some United supporters even compare their new star to Lionel Messi. Here's the best reaction:
