‘LOL Cena Wins’ is a meme WWE fans have become very familiar with over the years, mainly because big match John is used to overcoming the odds in almost every single feud he’s been part of over the years.

While he’s been heavily criticised for that in the past, he’s been doing a good job of putting over talent in recent times.

SUMMERSLAM

A perfect example of that was on SmackDown LIVE, where the 16-time world champion put over Shinsuke Nakamura who advances to SummerSlam to challenge Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship, with Cena adamant that The King of Strong Style won without shenanigans.

In turn, Cena takes on Baron Corbin at the biggest party of the summer with many expecting Cena to defeat The Lone Wolf so that the latter could potentially cash-in his contract during the WWE Championship match.

In Cena’s case, he’ll be hoping that the creative team book him to win, as he’s been suffering a massive losing streak at the major event – stretching back to 2011.

In 2011, CM Punk defeated Cena to become the WWE Champion with Triple H acting as the special referee, before Alberto Del Rio cashed in on the now-UFC star which kicked off Cena’s losing run.

The following year, Punk got the better of Cena again in another WWE Championship match, but this time The Big Show was involved in their triple threat match.

SUMMERSLAM STREAK

2013 saw Daniel Bryan pick up a clean win over his brother-in-law after connecting with the Running Knee, but another cash-in occurred when Triple H turned heel and allowed Randy Orton to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

Cena was dominated in 2014 from pillar to post, as Brock Lesnar took Cena to Suplex City to snatch the WWE Championship away from him, while Seth Rollins made history in 2015 when he retained his title, but took Cena’s United States Championship too.

In 2016, Cena’s SummerSlam championship run came to an end, as he was involved in a non-title match – but probably in one of the best matches that year – as he lost to AJ Styles before taking a hiatus from the company.

The last time he tasted victory at the event was back in 2010, when he led Team WWE to victory over the Nexus.

A win for Corbin would be huge for him as losses don’t tend to decrease Cena’s stock now, while it would help establish Corbin as a massive player on the blue brand.

On the other hand, with Cena set for a move to Monday Night RAW in the coming weeks, he probably doesn’t want to make the switch after a high-profile loss and extend that huge SummerSlam streak.
