Jack Wilshere’s Arsenal career looks dead in the water, let’s admit it.After a run of mediocre campaigns at the Emirates, last summer saw him loaned out to Bournemouth to allow him greater game time. His performances with the Cherries were somewhat underwhelming, though. The 25-year-old never scored for Eddie Howe’s men and only garnered two assists across 27 appearances.

His season on the south coast was cut short too when injury struck during Bournemouth’s trip to Tottenham in April. A fractured leg brought Wilshere’s campaign to a jarring close.

In fact, the Englishman has only just completed his recovery and is now fit ahead of the transfer window’s conclusion. Wilshere has been linked with moves to Newcastle United, Swansea City and even Juventus.

There is still a chance that Wilshere could remain at Arsenal, however. Arsene Wenger has allowed the midfielder to improve his fitness at the club by directing him to the Arsenal under 23 side.

He made his first appearance for the youth team on Monday night, operating as the midfield engine in a clash with Derby County U23s at St. George’s Park.

Playing alongside fellow first team contender Francis Coquelin, Wilshere did show moments of class – setting up a chance for Chris Willock. He even slotted into Arsenal’s back three when a centre-back marauded forward.

Kellan Gordon was the man to open the scoring for Derby with Wilshere struggling to intercept the assist. Overall, the Englishman produced a sound display but appeared far from full-match fitness.

Besides, every time Reiss Nelson had the ball at his feet, the last thing on supporters’ mind was Wilshere.

The 17-year-old enjoyed a fantastic pre-season with the first team and was up to his usual tricks for the youth side. Nelson scored twice against Derby in a 3-2 victory for Arsenal.

Furthermore, his second goal was a little bit special. Take a look below:

That, ladies and gentlemen, is what you call talent.

Inheriting the ball 40-yards out from goal, Nelson dribbled effortlessly towards the Derby penalty area and ghosted past the last defender. The finish he produced was inch perfect, kissing the post on its way to the net.

And it’s for displays such as that that Nelson’s first team hopes may actually outweigh those of Wilshere.

After all, Wenger isn’t giving anything away about the 25-year-old. As per the Daily Mail, he stated: “That decision is not completely made. I want him to have a chance to play somewhere as well. We have to decide that a bit later.”
