Jose Mourinho would have been the happiest manager in the Premier League over the weekend when his dominant Manchester United side picked up a 4-0 win against West Ham at Old Trafford.

In particular, the Portuguese would have been pleased with the performances of Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku; two of the three signings he’s made this summer with Victor Lindelof not in the matchday squad.

SIGNINGS

Many have claimed that it may very well have been the best attacking performance for United since Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement, with the £75million Belgian scoring a brace while Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial also got in on the act.

Even though it was the first game of the Premier League season, the Red Devils are seen as one of the favourites to be in the title race at the closing stages of the season – even if chief executive Ed Woodward hasn’t delivered the fourth signing Mourinho wanted.

While he’s admitted that he won’t cry about it, the Old Trafford outfit have been linked with numerous big-names throughout the summer.

Serge Aurier looks to be heading to Tottenham Hotspur, the Antoine Griezmann saga is over for another year while Mourinho himself has admitted that the Gareth Bale pursuit is all but dead after the Welsh international featured in Real Madrid’s 2-1 Super Cup final win in Skopje.

The interest in Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic suggests that Mourinho was hoping to land a left-winger, but even that deal doesn’t look to be progressing which may not disappoint United fans too much, as they voiced their opinion on social media that Martial deserved more of an opportunity.

COMPLETE SQUAD

Despite already spending around £145 million on their three arrivals, former United skipper Gary Neville told Sky Sports that they need to add a wide player like Arjen Robben to become a complete squad and win the Premier League.

According to MEN Sport, Neville said: “I’d name a player similar to Arjen Robben – a wide player.

“[Marcus] Rashford did very well but is he a wide player? Not really.

“I’m talking about someone who can generally play left side. If you could add one world-class winger to add to the squad, you could say yes it was a complete squad…they are covered everywhere, they have such strength.”

While arrivals will only strengthen the squad as a whole, both Rashford and Martial have displayed that they can operate in that position.
