It’s not been an easy ride for Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

The Red Devils are yet to mount a serious title challenge and have only finished in the top four once after the Scot hung up his hairdryer. Nevertheless, there is hope that all will change upon Jose Mourinho’s second season at the club.

The Special One was able to smuggle United into the Champions League through the back door, winning the Europa League with a 2-0 win over Ajax.

This year, though, Mourinho will be looking to be as competitive in Europe’s premier competition as he was in its deputy. The club has certainly spent enough money to accommodate such a challenge, after all.

And for all the heavy spending this summer, United are yet to overshadow the £89 million fee they footed for Paul Pogba last year.

The French midfielder experienced a sound first season back at Old Trafford and will look to kick on in 2016-17. Furthermore, the risk of joining a club without Champions League football has now, of course, washed away.

He is more than looking forward to a return to the competition, too. When you consider Pogba’s talent, it should hardly be surprising.

The 24-year-old experienced a number of successful European campaigns with Juventus, even reaching the final in 2015. Nevertheless, strikes from Ivan Rakitic, Luis Suarez and Neymar denied him club football’s biggest prize.

And, as per the Mirror, the midfielder has revealed exactly what he missed most about Champions League football. To say it was a typical Pogba answer would be putting it mildly.

He explained: "You don't even know. I've missed the music. I was here looking at my friends at Juventus and listening to the music and I'm like... [shakes head].

"We are back at it. We are back. It feels great."

Well, Pogba need not fear as he will be hearing Tony Britten’s 1992 composition of ‘Champions League’ far more intimately this year.

It goes without saying that the Frenchman deserves a lot of credit for United’s return. It was his deflected strike in Stockholm that opened the scoring in a tense Europa League climax.

But, as much as he missed it, Pogba isn’t just back for the music. United will be hoping to go as far as possible in the competition and their squad holds great promise.

Given Mourinho’s record in the competition, supporters wouldn’t be unrealistic in getting their hopes up.
