Remember the name Marco Asensio. The Real Madrid star, 21, scored a brilliant goal to seal victory over Barcelona in Sunday’s 3-1 victory in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup and he was at it again in the second leg with an ever better effort. The Spaniard received the ball 30 yards out and, with nobody closing him down, decided to let fly.And he’ll be glad he did, his left-footed effort soaring beyond Marc-Andre ter Stegen and into the top corner.Real can certainly be confident that, when Cristiano Ronaldo eventually leaves, they have a player capable of filling his boots.Watch Asensio’s stunning effort below.

Here’s how fans on Twitter reacted, including a tweet from Roberto Soldado.

Barça missed out on Asensio

Asensio’s goal has given Real a 4-1 lead on aggregate as they look to add another piece of silverware to the collection following last season’s triumphs in La Liga and the Champions League.

What makes Asensio’s even more difficult for Barça is the fact that he could have been doing it for the Blaugrana.

The winger’s agent, Horacio Gaggioli, told Bleacher Report that Barcelona were close to signing Asensio from Mallorca in 2014 but the move fell through with Barça unwilling to pay €4.5 million in one payment, instead wanting to pay €2.5m initially with €2m to follow at a later date.

"Barca said: 'No, we're not able.' They lost the opportunity," Gaggioli said. "When they changed their mind after three months, it was too late."

Ronaldo watched on

Ronaldo’s absence from the return fixture dominated much of the build up, with the Portuguese’s five-match ban for his sending off and push on the referee being upheld by Spanish football authorities on Wednesday.

It prompted a furious reaction from Ronaldo, who took to Instagram to express his displeasure at the ruling.

He wrote: “Impossible to stay immune in this situation, 5 games! It seems to me exaggerated and ridiculous, this is persecution! Thanks to my colleagues for the support and the fans!!!”

With Zinedine Zidane naming Isco and Gareth Bale on the bench, it’s doubtful Ronaldo would have started at the Bernabeu anyway.
