Marco Asensio is one of the hottest prospects in world football, no doubt about it.

The Spaniard has settled into the Real Madrid first team with astonishing ease and is more than comfortable alongside the club’s ‘galaticos’. This was no more apparent than during the Spanish Super Cup.

In a hectic first leg at the Nou Camp, Asensio continued his incredible record in debuts by firing home a screamer in stoppage time.

The 21-year-old only went and bettered himself in the second leg too. After a tense start to the game, he effectively ended the tie with a breath-taking goal from 30-yards out.

That’s not to mention the fact he had been a thorn in the side of Barcelona in general. In spite of his age, Asensio more than filled the void left by the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo.

What should make the situation all the more painful for the Catalans is the fact Asensio could have been wearing a Barcelona shirt in El Clasico.

This came to light after Asensio’s agent - Horacio Gaggioli – told Bleacher Report that a deal with Barcelona only fell through on financial grounds. It’s an agonising explanation when you consider the Spaniard’s release clause is now £72 million.

Interestingly, though, Barcelona’s interest may have been sparked when they were subject to an Asensio screamer akin to his El Clasico effort, back in 2014.

Featuring for Mallorca against a Barcelona B side, the 21-year-old produced an incredible finish in a 4-2 win for his old side. Take a look at the strike below:

With the game already fizzling out for a 3-2 away win, Asensio lined up a 30-yard free-kick from a difficult angle. However, hitting the ball with both curve and power, he was able to beat the Barcelona ‘keeper at his near post.

So, in many ways, it was a painful case of déjà vu for Barça on Wednesday night.

Just watching the 2014 clip serves to demonstrate Asensio’s early signs of talent but it’s his Real switch that has propelled him to the next level.

It’s incredible to think he was snatched up for just €3.9 million.

Rather inspiringly, he has gone from scoring a worldie against Barcelona B in the Spanish division to a screamer against the first team in the Spanish Super Cup in just three years. Now that is why he’s called a rising star.
