WWE fans received a shock this past week when watching SmackDown Live, as Baron Corbin cashed in his Money in the Bank contract unsuccessfully on Jinder Mahal, losing his chance to become WWE Champion.

The Lone Wolf interfered in John Cena's match against the WWE Champion on Tuesday night, stopping The Leader of the Cenation from picking up the pinfall victory. He then attacked Cena before cashing in his Money in the Bank contract on a fallen Mahal.

This surprised many fans watching the show live in the arena and at home as many expected the cash in to come at SummerSlam this weekend, and not on the go-home before WWE's biggest part of the summer. What was even more surprising was the outcome of the match.

Following his cash in and the referee starting the match, Cena jumped on the apron but Corbin turned around and hit him back to the floor. This was enough, however, to distract The Lone Wolf temporarily for Mahal to roll him up for the win and retain his title.

This marked only the third time in WWE history that a superstar has failed to win a world title following a Money in the Bank cash in, and speculation has since emerged as to why this is the case.

According to Cageside Seats, WWE officials may have lost their faith in Baron Corbin as a top guy. Apparently, WWE officials weren’t pleased with him underperforming during his promos with Cena, and they weren't happy with his social media activity in recent weeks, as it has also rubbed some people the wrong way backstage.

How much of this heat from WWE officials has played into their decision to have him not capture the WWE Championship remains to be seen, but for the time being, Corbin's main event run will not be starting at SummerSlam this weekend.

His match for WWE's biggest party of the summer hasn't been changed, as The Lone Wolf will still be facing Cena this Sunday, a match he is still expected to win. However, seems as he is no longer Mr. Money in the Bank, he will not be walking out of SummerSlam as WWE Champion.
