Paul Merson's punditry career is something that is often associated with its comedic value because, lets face it, the Sky Sports regular is famed for spouting nonsense. He may have been a brilliant player in his day but now, his career consists of speaking his mind and then being ridiculed relentlessly on social media. There have been some absolute gems in the last few years, such as recommending that Arsenal play Hector Bellerin at centre-back to combat Jamie Vardy, to mispronouncing every foreign name on the Premier League circuit.

European football is certainly not Merson's forte, so when he was asked about Tottenham target Davison Sanchez of Ajax, his response was incredibly predictable.

Talking on Sky Sports News, the Englishman simply said "I've never heard of him" when asked about the Colombian international.

Oh dear, yet another one for Merson's error-filled scrapbook. He even continued by saying he feels "Spurs will get left behind" because of the signing, despite the fact that the South American is one of the brightest prospects in the game.

Naturally, Twitter reacted to his rather lazy assessment of the player.

Sanchez is set to become Spurs' first major signing of the summer and is viewed as a replacement for Austrian international, Kevin Wimmer.

The Colombian may even slot straight into Mauricio Pochettino's first team alongside Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in a back three.

Sanchez should cost around £40m, which would eclipse the £30m paid for famous flop Moussa Sissoko last summer.

Spurs will surely have to bring in more players to go with the signing of the Ajax man and they may miss out on long-term target Ross Barkley.

The Everton man has a serious hamstring issue picked up in training, meaning a move this summer is highly unlikely.
