It’s fair to say Arsenal’s record at Stoke City leaves a lot to be desired. The Gunners’ first Premier League clashes in Staffordshire were littered with poor defending exposed by Rory Delap and his superhuman throw-ins. Since then, Arsene Wenger has been powerless to stop the hoodoo. And while last season produced just their second win at the Bet365 Stadium in the league, normal service looked to be resumed on Saturday.

After a first-half that saw both sides exchange blows and Jack Butland coming to the Potters’ rescue, Jese Rodriguez broke the deadlock.

The 24-year-old moved to Stoke on loan just this week with Paris Saint-Germain, unsurprisingly, doubtful of his ability to rival Neymar, Angel di Maria and Julian Draxler in the side.

Under Mark Hughes, however, he has hit the ground running.

Saido Berahino took Shkodran Mustafi out the game with a superb pass into Rodriguez, who slotted the ball neatly past Petr Cech.

And trust Gary Lineker to sum up the goal with a perfect tweet. The Match of the Day presenter tends to nail his social media posts and uploaded this classic:

If Rodriguez even touches Twitter after the Arsenal clash, he’ll be more than aware of the classic Tuesday night/Stoke City meme.

The ex-Real Madrid man is happy to extend his goal scoring to a Saturday night, though, of course.

The Potters had been disappointed by a 1-0 loss to Everton on the opening day and lacked confidence in the opening exchanges with Arsenal. Cue Jese and those early season worries erupted into an upsurge in Stoke’s play.

His opening strike sparked opportunities for both Berahino and fellow new arrival Eric Chupo-Moting. Stoke just love it against Arsenal.
