American boxer Andre Ward, who has claimed the super middleweight and light heavyweight title, believes he has the skill set to take down heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

After being voted as the top pound-for-pound boxer by The Ring magazine, Ward has made it clear it is only the difference in weight class that is preventing an immediate match up.

Up until 2015, Ward fought in the super middleweight bracket, before jumping up to the light heavyweight division which also saw him claim the title.

Ambitious as ever, Ward targets jumping up two more weight classes with the aim to take down the much coveted heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua.

Speaking about his chances and expectations for the impending match up, The Sun reports that Ward said: “He is the heavyweight champion of the world, he deserves that respect.

“Of course my team and myself, I believe I can beat anybody, so we’ll see.”

Ward has made quite the name for himself since entering the world of professional boxing.

The American has faced 32 opponents in his career, coming out on top in each encounter, while 16 of those victories came via KO.

He has even thrived on the biggest stage, as he claimed gold in the 2004 Olympics in Athens under the light heavyweight bracket.

With eight major titles under his belt, Ward and his trainer Virgil Hunter have high hopes of reaching the heavyweight bracket to face Joshua.

According to The Sun, Hunter Hunter said: "I'm not playing, I am serious, I believe he could outbox Anthony Joshua.

"It would be a waste of time to go to the cruisers [cruiserweights] we should go for it all."

At 6ft and 175 pounds, Ward faces a monumental task to bulk up to match the intimidating figure of Joshua, who comes in at a much heavier 250 pounds after his last fight.

What the undefeated Ward lacks in physically is made up by his supreme level of confidence and aptitude on how to fight.

The British boxer Joshua is no easy opponent, however.

Joshua too is undefeated in his professional career, that has seen 19 opponents faced and 19 opponents defeated by KO.

As the current heavyweight champ, Joshua has claimed titles at the Olympics, the World Championships, and the GB Championships, all in England.

Ward has expressed his “respect” to his British colleague, but has no doubt in his mind that a matchup between the two would only result in victory for the undefeated American.
