After the Claudio Bravo debacle, Pep Guardiola was under considerable pressure this summer to sign a reliable first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.Joe Hart was available following his return from Torino but Guardiola had no desire to give the England international an opportunity to resurrect his Manchester City career.Instead, the Catalan coach convinced City to fork out a cool £34.9 million on Brazilian keeper Ederson from Benfica. The signing of Ederson, who only turned 24 last week, was undoubtedly another gamble by City’s manager. The South American had only played 37 matches in the Portuguese top-flight and there was every chance that he would require time to settle in the Premier League. However, Ederson showed during his time with Benfica that he was very competent with the ball at his feet. His distribution was also outstanding.
