The first episode of Smackdown Live following a memorable Summer Slam event brought about quite a few shocks for the WWE Universe.

From an impromptu United States Championship match to the highly anticipated call up of former NXT Champion Bobby Roode, fans in the Barclays Center were not disappointed.

Return of the Gold Standard

It has been over a year since the WWE held the Draft and split the RAW and Smackdown brands.

Since then, several big names have re-entered the company and helped the rosters add some much needed depth.

One name that was advertised to be returning to the company shortly after the draft before suffering a long term injury was former Intercontinental Champion Shelton Benjamin.

The Gold Standard has been away from WWE since 2010 and revealing his return last year really got the fans talking - but since then they have had to play the waiting game.

That was however, until Tuesday night.

During a backstage segment between Smackdown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan and Chad Gable, Bryan apologised for trading Gable's long term tag team partner Jason Jordan to RAW.

Bryan would go on to reveal though as part of the trade that saw Jordan pair up with his father Kurt Angle on RAW, Angle would help Bryan sign an old friend.

He introduced Gable to Benjamin who will now pair up alongside the former collegiate athlete to form what may just be the most athlete team in WWE.

Bryan revealed that the two will team up for the first time next week on Smackdown Live, although no opponents for them have yet been announced.

Gable was very enthusiastic about his new tag team partner and was more than happy for them to team up for the first time next week.

Benjamin however appeared less enthusiastic about the prospect of their first match next week, and time will tell just how successful the two teaming together will be.

A big night for the blue brand

Smackdown had quite a big night despite losing free agent John Cena to RAW in the hours that followed Summer Slam.

Revealing the arrival of Benjamin and the debut of former NXT Champion Bobby Roode, Smackdown has brought in two big name talents to replace arguably their biggest name in Cena.
