Gradi praise for hero Phillips

Caretaker manager Dario Gradi saluted goalkeeper Steve Phillips after his two first-half penalty saves inspired Crewe to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Chesterfield at Saltergate.

Phillips kept out spot-kicks from Davide Somma and Wade Small to end Chesterfield's unbeaten home league record.

"To save two penalties in the same game is most unusual. But all credit to Steve, they didn't miss them, he saved them," Gradi said.

"We rode our luck at times but we haven't had much luck since I took over and to get three points here is terrific.

"Overall, they are the best team we have played and I'm glad we don't have to come here again.

"I thought we defended better in the second half but we didn't play as well. We gave the ball away too easily and kicked too many long balls. But we do create and we are hard to hold and I think we are improving. We have got something to work on."
