Di Matteo quiet on Campbell talk

West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo has not been in touch with Sol Campbell since the defender settled his contract dispute with Notts County on Wednesday.

The experienced centre-back left Meadow Lane less than a month into his five-year deal, which led to County refusing to release his registration unless he agreed to a "statement of departure". That was not forthcoming, although the delicate situation was finally resolved this week.

Speaking on Thursday afternoon, the Baggies head coach remained coy when asked about any developments. "We get linked with so many players," he said. "We got linked with Jamie Ward from Sheffield United, I don`t know where that came from. We get linked with players every day almost."

West Brom are believed to have held preliminary talks with Campbell at the start of October when his immediate future was unclear.

With the potential loss of Abdoulaye Meite for the African Nations Cup, Di Matteo could well be in the market for cover.

Di Matteo added: "I saw that (Campbell becoming a free agent). I never spoke to him on Wednesday, so there`s no news on that front."
