Cristiano Ronaldo faced competition from Gianluigi Buffon and Lionel Messi for the 2016-17 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award. But after winning La Liga and the Champions League with Real Madrid, scoring 42 goals in 46 matches in the process, there was only ever going to be one winner. As well as taking the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award, the Portuguese superstar also won the UEFA Champion League Forward of the Season accolade. Both awards thoroughly deserved.Ronaldo is now expected to add another Ballon d’Or award to his collection at the end of the year.

If he does, he will equal the number of Ballon d’Or awards (five) won by Messi - a remarkable achievement when you consider the Barcelona forward led 4-1 back in 2012.
