Marshall boost for Bluebirds

David Marshall has recovered from a knee problem in time to line up against Preston as Cardiff look to put their off-field problems behind them and get their season back on track.

The Scotland goalkeeper was forced off at half-time in last Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Ipswich to be replaced by Peter Enckelman but he has recovered quickly and will be okay.

Full-back Kevin McNaughton has also returned to full training after pulling up with a small tear in his hamstring on his return from an ankle injury at Barnsley. But it would be unlikely to see him thrown in from the off again.

Centre-back Gabor Gyepes kept his place against Town despite the return of Anthony Gerrard (calf) and he will be hoping to get the nod once more against North End, for whom former Bluebird Paul Parry will be looking to impress on his return to South Wales.

Winger Kelvin Etuhu made his first appearance last weekend after damaging ankle ligaments and he will be keen to continue his comeback but midfielder Stephen McPhail will be unavailable until the new year as he undergoes treatment for cancer.

November was a tough month for Cardiff with troubles off the pitch compounded by one point from a possible 12 on it and manager Dave Jones may be considering changes as he looks to bring the feel-good factor back.

Preston boss Alan Irvine could again deploy Eddie Nolan at centre-back.

Frenchman Youl Mawene will not play for several months after damaging knee ligaments in North End's recent defeat at the hands of Newcastle.

Liam Chilvers - whose absence through illness forced Irvine to pair left-back Nolan alongside Neill Collins at the heart of the defence in Monday's 1-1 draw at derby rivals Blackpool - could remain sidelined.

Nolan's performance earned him a ringing endorsement from Irvine and he will continue there should Chilvers remain out as the Lilywhites seek to end a five-match winless streak.

Midfielder Barry Nicholson remains a long-term absentee but winger Ross Wallace has shaken off a knock sustained in Monday's derby and will play.
