Paulie Malignaggi has certainly had an eventful few weeks. The retired two-time boxing champion turned out to be a prominent figure in the build-up to the Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor fight.Malignaggi sensationally quit McGregor’s training camp, just weeks before the bout in Las Vegas, after photos from their sparring sessions were leaked online. The 36-year-old then spent the next few weeks bad-mouthing McGregor and was even filmed the other day alongside Mayweather, hinting that he accepted the chance to spar against the UFC superstar in order to spy for McGregor’s team.“My friend, it’s my friend, Paulie,” Mayweather said on the video, which was shared across social media. “My friend Paulie has always been my friend. You know what, I even told my friend - my friend called me and said, ‘Floyd, do you want me to go to camp?’ I said, ‘Abso-f**king-lutely’.”Malignaggi, meanwhile, repeated the phrase “Suckers”.With this in mind, it’s safe to assume Malignaggi would have been delighted with Mayweather’s victory over McGregor at the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night.

Malignaggi praises McGregor's start to the fight

The American was working as a pundit for UFC TV and praised McGregor’s start to the fight.

“I think he started the fight very well, actually,” Malignaggi commented. “It was tactical brilliance almost. It was awkward but effective in the early stages.

“Now, having said that, the mental pressure Floyd was applying… Conor doesn’t have enough experience in the ring, so it’s going to fatigue him a little faster because he sees this guy constantly walking him down.”

Malignaggi reacts to McGregor complaining about stoppage

McGregor felt referee Robert Byrd had stopped the fight too early and said after the fight: “I would have liked to have hit the floor, he should have let me keep going.”

However, Malignaggi believes the referee made the correct decision.

“As far as the stoppage is concerned, we saw Conor saying ‘I would liked to have ended up on my back’ … here’s the problem with that: you have to punch back. He didn’t punch back for over a minute in that final sequence,” he added.

“If you want to really fight, you have to show that referee want to fight. You can’t just say afterwards ‘I wanted to fight’.

“If you don’t throw a punch back for a minute while you’re being assaulted, you got to get stopped. You can’t put the referee in that kind of position, so as much as he said he wanted to continue fighting, he had the chance to show that.”
