Sports fans are talking about one thing and one thing only this morning: Floyd Mayweather’s victory over Conor McGregor in Las Vegas. The American secured the 50th and final victory of his illustrious career at the T-Mobile Arena, stopping UFC superstar McGregor in the 10th round.McGregor displayed guts and tenacity but was ultimately outclassed by a man who will be remembered as one of the greatest boxers of all time.Stars from other sports, as well as a host of boxers including Manny Pacquiao, have also had their say on social media in recent hours. This is an event which has captured the world’s imagination; not just boxing fans’.Among those who stayed up to watch the most lucrative fight in boxing history was the former England striker Gary Lineker.

Lineker tweets after Mayweather beats McGregor

The Match of the Day host paid tribute to both fighters on Twitter after the bout, but his description of McGregor’s performance has led to a rather surprising backlash.

Lineker tweeted: “Really brave effort from @TheNotoriousMMA but @FloydMayweather is a true champion of his sport.”

First, he received replies from people adamant it was a ‘farce’ of a fight…

Lineker gets stick for calling McGregor 'brave'

And then he had people telling him McGregor wasn’t brave but rather greedy for taking the money despite knowing he was very unlikely to win…

Lineker's tweet seems perfectly reasonable

McGregor stands to earn over $75 million for going head-to-head against Mayweather; however, there’s surely no doubt that he did show immense bravery by taking on Mayweather in his first ever competitive fight.

And the fact the Irishman gave his opponent a run for his money - one scorecard even had him down as winning the fight after the fifth round - means the Irishman deserves immense credit for his efforts.

Lineker’s tweet looks perfectly reasonable to us.
