Literally everything that Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid have touched over the past few months has turned into gold. They ended last season by dethroning rivals Barcelona as champions of Spain and by becoming the first ever team to successfully defend the Champions League. If that wasn't enough, their first three matches of this campaign led to them winning both the UEFA and Spanish Super Cups after victories over Manchester United and Barca respectively.

Madrid began the defence of their league title with a 3-0 win at Deportivo last weekend, however they couldn't make it two wins out of two on Sunday night.

Despite dominating possession, Real drew 2-2 against a spirited Valencia side, and there was one moment in particular which absolutely infuriated manager Zidane.

Asensio to the rescue

Marco Asensio gave the champions a 1-0 lead in the 10th-minute after a lovely solo run and strike, but Valencia led 2-1 heading into the final seven minutes of the game.

Cue the Spanish starlet to step up for Real again, this time with a clever free-kick to score the equaliser and ensure that Los Blancos didn't lose their first home league match of the season.

The reason why the youngster's goals ended up being so important was due to the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, the quietness of Gareth Bale and the wastefulness of Karim Benzema.

It just wasn't Benzema's night

The Frenchman has scored 181 times for Madrid since joining from Lyon in 2009, however, he had a night to forget in front of a frustrated Bernabeu crowd.

Benzema was guilty of missing a number of clear scoring opportunities against Los Che, with the biggest chance probably coming in the 88th-minute, which you can see further down the page.

As Real flooded the Valencia box, a loose ball fell perfectly to Benzema and it was all set up for him to score the winner, but he unbelievably dragged his shot wide of the post.

Zidane is a usually a very cool customer on the sidelines, but as you can see in the videos above and below, even he showed his frustration at the 29-year-old's miss, hitting the ground in anger.

There was still time for Real's number nine to see his header brilliantly tipped onto the post by Valencia goalkeeper Neto and they had to settle for a point.

Zidane's post-match reaction to Benzema

Speaking after the game, Zidane said, via Marca: "The public (crowd) does what it wants, the important thing is that he (Benzema) has chances. If he fails, nothing happens, football is like that and sometimes the ball does not want to go in."

On how he'd welcome his striker in the coming days, the French boss added: "With a smile. You have to tell him to keep working.

"The most difficult thing is to have chances. He has not scored, but he has worked hard and I can not reproach a player who misses goals."

While Madrid are undoubtedly the team to beat in La Liga, Benzema must be more clinical if they are to maintain their remarkable levels of success so far under Zizou.
