Jurgen Klopp sprang a massive surprise in his team selection ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Arsenal by ‘resting’ goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.Ok, Mignolet isn’t the best goalkeeper in the world but the Belgian hadn’t done too much wrong in Liverpool’s opening four matches of the season. And to rest a goalkeeper so early into the campaign during a massive clash against Arsenal - and not even naming him on the bench - was just strange. Even more so when you consider there is an international break next week - where Mignolet probably won’t even get any game time with Thibaut Courtois in his way.So yeah, it was an odd decision. But Loris Karius came in and didn’t have a single shot to save as Liverpool thrashed Arsenal 4-0.Despite not having a single shot to save, Karius did his very best to prove Klopp wrong by selecting him.The first of those moments came shortly after Roberto Firmino had given the home side the lead.Georginio Wijnaldum played the ball back to the 24-year-old who took far too long on the ball, allowing Danny Welbeck to get a tackle in. Fortunately for Liverpool, the ball didn’t rebound towards the empty net or to an Arsenal player.

It was almost as if the entire Liverpool fans inside the stadium all asked: “Why on earth is Karius playing?” at the same time as the atmosphere completely changed.

How Klopp reacted

But Klopp wasn’t panicking.

After the incident, he turned to the crowd and told them to get off Karius’ back and to calm down.

And Klopp even referred to this after the game.

“But obviously you could hear in the stadium that we all need to get used to playing football in close situations. For the goalkeeper or if Emre has the ball and someone is around him, the whole crowd was like ‘woooah,’ he said.

“They are all a little bit surprised, the players should not be because of orientation, you need to play in close spaces, as a goalkeeper and as an outfield player."

Who will start in goal vs Manchester City

Despite Mignolet being left out of the squad and Karius keeping a clean sheet, Klopp revealed after the game who will be starting against Manchester City after the international break.

“Yes Simon is a clear number one but the others are not clear number twos and threes,” he said.

“100% if nothing happens Simon will play against, who’s next opponent? Manchester City.”
