Serge Aurier’s availability has resulted in a battle between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur for the Paris Saint-Germain right-back.

Antonio Valencia has been fine for Man United and Kieran Trippier is a worthy replacement for Kyle Walker at Spurs, but both Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino view the 24-year-old as an upgrade on their current options.

And, aside from the off-field issues, it’s easy to see why. Aurier was named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year in 2013-14 and 2015-16 and has already received a ringing endorsement from Didier Drogba, who played with the right-back for the Ivory Coast.

“Serge brought us energy and balance,” Drogba said about Aurier’s efforts in a 2014 World Cup win over Japan, per The Guardian.

“He’s the best right-back in all of France. I think he’ll do well at the next level too, in the Premier League.”

Aurier’s exit from PSG was agreed in July and since then it’s been about finding the player a new club.

According to ESPN, Spurs have agreed to pay €25 million for the Ivory Coast international, who is behind Thomas Munier in the pecking order at the Parc des Princes.

Aurier prefers Man United - but there's an issue

Yet SFR Sport have reported that Aurier actually prefers a move to Man United.

However, Tottenham have submitted the highest bid and so PSG, who don’t care where Aurier ends up just so long as they receive a suitable amount for him, would prefer to sell him to the north London outfit.

Missing out on Aurier wouldn’t cause Mourinho to lose any sleep. Valencia has proven himself to be a decent right-back and, so long as the Colombian stays fit, is more than good enough for Mourinho’s title-challenging squad.

It’s a similar situation at Wembley Stadium, where Trippier is among the finest right-backs in the league.

But Pochettino has brought in just one new player this summer, so the arrival of a player with Champions League experience would go down well with Tottenham fans.

SFR Sport also reported that Paul Pogba, who had a big part to play in Romelu Lukaku’s £75 million move from Everton in the summer, has pushed Man United to move for Aurier.
