Arsene Wenger seems unwilling to give his players a dressing down, regardless of how badly they perform out on the pitch, but you suspect Gary Neville would have no qualms in telling them exactly what he thought following their embarrassing 4-0 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.

The former Manchester United captain was on co-commentary duty for Sky Sports at Anfield and couldn’t believe what he was witnessing.

“I’m absolutely fuming watching them,” Neville said. “Three of four of these Arsenal players want to leave… “who wants to buy them!?”

The majority of Arsenal fans, many of whom probably hated Neville during his playing career, couldn’t disagree with the Sky Sports pundit’s devastating comments.

This was a performance that will be remembered as one of the worst - perhaps even *the* worst - of Wenger’s tenure.

Neville: The issue I had with Arsenal's players

"The issue today I had in the first 15 or 20 mins - and why I was as scathing I was - is because [Mesut] Ozil, [Alexis] Sanchez, [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xhaka, Ramsey, they didn't do most basic things I think every fan, manager, and player knows - when the ball goes past you and it goes towards your goal and your team-mates are struggling, you run back as quickly as you can,” Neville said.

"You're told that at the age of five. Aged 12 or 13, you're told to get into your shape quickly and when you get into the first team you're told about transition - give the ball way, get back in, transition, transition.

"In terms of the tactics, the football, the mistakes, you'd need five Monday Night Footballs to analyse what went wrong there. But the simple premise of working hard, getting back towards your own goal - it's just unacceptable."

Neville hailed James Milner after the match

As well as tearing into the Gunners, Neville also hailed Liverpool for their impressive performance and reserved special praise at the end of the Gary Neville Podcast for one Red in particular.

Not any of the four goalscorers - Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge - but James Milner.

The 31-year-old replaced Firmino with 10 minutes to go but Neville, sitting high up at Anfield and speaking following the match, was delighted to see the former England international working hard out on the pitch on his own well after the full-time whistle had been blown.

“Just one thing, Martin, there’s a player out there on the pitch that’s sprinting like crazy on his own called James Milner,” Neville noted. “He’s sprinting up and down - he’s probably 31 or 32 years of age now - that to me is what I expect from a professional football player.

“He’s not got a game for two weeks, he’s not in the international squad, he’ll have no-one to train with, yet he’s out on that pitch on his own, having only played five minutes, sprinting up and down.

“Having coached him with England for four years, it doesn’t surprise me, but that’s what I expect from a football player - that they take their own career into their own hands with professionalism, dignity and attitude.

“If I was a Liverpool fan in one of these seats that are around us in the boxes, I’d want to see the rest of my players out there on that pitch, doing what he’s doing. That’s how you get a long career in football and that’s what I’m coming back to with the Arsenal players in the beginning of this match.

“I’m not quite sure many of them would have been running on the pitch today after the game.”

Tyler then suggested that, with no trains back to Euston from Liverpool, Arsenal’s players should be made to run home.

Savage, Martin.

“Well, I’ve got to get an armoured car out of Liverpool first,” Neville joked, “Forget Euston!”
