Throughout the summer, Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez has been rigorously linked with a move away from the Emirates.

The Chilean forward was the Gunners' standout player in 2016/17 and without him, Arsene Wenger's side would have struggled to make the top six.

Sanchez managed 24 Premier League goals, assisting 10 more, and with just one year left on his current deal at the Emirates, his future seems destined to be away from north London.

Manchester City have been the most interested party, with Pep Guardiola desperate to work with the player again, as he was the one who signed him for Barcelona from Udinese.

Arsenal have remained adamant that they will not let their star man go but as we approach the final few days of the window, it seems keeping him will not be easy.

Their 4-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday seemed to be the last straw for Sanchez, despite the fact the winger played just as badly as anyone on the pitch.

On Tuesday morning, it was revealed that City were preparing to offer Arsenal around £20m and Raheem Sterling in order to sign him.

On the face of it, it's a deal which could be promising for the Gunners, acquiring a talented 22-year-old Englishman with bags of Premier League experience.

Well, it appears that the Arsenal hierarchy were intrigued by the prospect because a few hours later, they were prepared to make a bizarre counter offer.

According to Sky Sports, Wenger's side will offer city Sanchez plus a cash sum in order to sign the former Liverpool man.

The reasoning behind it could be that due to the lack of options on the market to replace the Chilean, Arsenal wish to get a replacement for him as soon as possible.

Sterling has started the season brightly, scoring two goals and letting him go would be a tad odd from City, seeing as they're desperate to fill their homegrown quota and only signed him two years ago for £50m.
