Tomas Satoransky played a minimal role for the Washington Wizards in his rookie season, averaging just 2.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists over 12.6 minutes per contest in 57 regular-season games played.

In the playoffs, he played a total of 36 minutes over 10 appearances, scoring just eight points while dishing out six assists in the process.

However, he may be in store for a major uptick in minutes in 2017-2018, as indicated by Wizards head coach Scott Brooks.

"Regardless of how you feel as a player that 'I need to play this position,' I think those days are done,” Brooks told Chase Hughes of CSN Mid-Atlantic. "I know he likes that he's been a point guard all his life, but the way we play and the way the NBA is, you need playmakers on the court. Sometimes we all, even myself, we get caught up in his he a one or is he a two? No, they're basketball players.”

At 6’7”, the Czech guard has the length to play multiple positions and his versatility could end up being a major factor in his eventual playing time, even alongside stars John Wall and Bradley Beal.

"I think he can do multiple positions,” the coach explained. “I think he can play one, two and three. He has the size to do that," Brooks said. "We want to have a system where we have a couple of guards and a couple of forwards and a center out there. You can argue that we can have three guards on the court at the same time. With John [Wall] and Brad [Beal], they both can handle the ball. They both can play pick-and-roll. You can have Tomas and Tim in the game. You can have Tomas and John in the game. They both handle the ball. You need multiple playmakers in the game."

By “Tim”, Brooks was referring to Tim Frazier, who the team traded for earlier this summer. Despite Frazier’s ability to fill the stat sheet in limited minutes over the last few seasons elsewhere, Wizards general manager Ernie Grunfeld was quick to note that Satoransky would not be overlooked in the coming season.

"Tomas is a versatile player who can play two or three different positions and competition is good. He has a year of experience under his belt. He can play the point, he can play two and he can play three, so I don’t think that will affect him too much. But competition is good among your players,” the GM said at the time.

At the very minimum, Satoransky will likely have an opportunity to play a major role on the team’s second unit. Despite the fact that he struggled from beyond the arc in his limited role last season (9-for-37), he proved that he could take care of the ball, dishing out 92 assists compared to 38 turnovers.

It may be early, but the 25-year-old is someone to watch in the upcoming season, as he will likely have an opportunity to carve out an important role on a presumed contender in the Eastern Conference.
