Frances Tiafoe revealed that Roger Federer told him he was ‘going to have one hell of a future’ after the pair enjoyed a fabulous match at the US Open.

The American teenager pushed the world No. 3 all the way in a five-set contest under the Arthur Ashe roof, but just came up short in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 loss.

At the conclusion of their fascinating encounter, Federer embraced Tiafoe at the net and offered him some words of wisdom, and the 19-year-old revealed exactly what the 19-time major winner said to him.

Federer said: "You’re only getting better and better. Keep going, you’re going to have one hell of a future.

"I mean, right after, you don’t really process it. It’s kind of just, obviously you’re not happy. You’re not really hearing it. But when you calm down, it’s unbelievable hearing something like that from him."

"I mean, for sure he’s the best player of all time. He’s also a nice guy on tour. Always says the right things, always does the right things. He’s like a great ambassador for the sport. It means a lot that he said that to me, that he thinks I have a future. That definitely gives me some confidence."

Federer looked uncomfortable in the early stages, and he surprisingly dropped serve during his first attempt of the match.

Only the one break was enough for Tiafoe to claim the first set of the match, yet after that, Federer looked in fine form and blitzed through the second and third sets with Tiafoe only managing to win three games in the process.

Yet, remarkably, Tiafoe turned it completely around and dominated the fourth set, stunning Federer and the crowd by winning 6-1, and taking it to a fifth and final set.

In a final set, which had many twists and turns with both men breaking each other, ultimately it was Federer who held his nerve to convert the match point when Tiafoe dragged a forehand into the net.
