Chris Jericho continues to give a backstory on his WWE return.

WWE caught their fans off guard during the July 25th episode of SmackDown Live on the USA Network when Kevin Owens opened the show with an in-ring promo segment. AJ Styles walked out to the ring to confront him. Owens, who had beaten Styles for the United States Championship at the Battleground PPV (pay-per-view) event, denied Styles his request for a rematch.

This led to the return of Jericho, who had not appeared on WWE TV since he was written out of storylines when he was attacked by Owens on SmackDown Live in May. Both Styles and Jericho wanted a title match that night.

Owens defended the US Title against both Jericho and Styles on the show in a Triple Threat Match. This would serve as the main event. By looking at the history books, Styles ended up winning the match and the championship, which marked the second time that he has held the US Title.

Jericho has gone on record by saying that he was originally just supposed to film his role in Southpaw Regional Wrestling while backstage at the event. During a recent appearance on Busted Open Radio, Jericho commented on his unexpected appearance. According to Jericho, he was inserted into the match because Styles and Owens had botched their finish at the Battleground pay-per-view event.

"The idea was for me to work with AJ on Tuesday, do nothing with Kevin," Jericho said (transcript courtesy of Wrestling Inc). "And then the match happened on the Sunday, and they legitimately screwed it up, it happens sometimes. Whatever happened didn't work." That's why they did the triple threat because they had to get the belt back on AJ because of the screw-up over the weekend."

Jericho added that it didn’t matter that the finish of the match was botched due to the fact that he was going to be in Richmond, Virginia anyway for his commitment to Southpaw Regional Wrestling.

"It ended up working out great," Jericho said. "It was the classic Vince line of taking a negative and turn it into a positive. And it was a great appearance, the match was great, the promo was great. It was a lot of fun."
