This NBA offseason has been a wild one, from star players switching teams to others demanding trades and then watching as those trades get held up.

After the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers completed a mega-trade involving star point guard Kyrie Irving going to the Celtics in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a 2018 first-round pick, concerns about Thomas's hip injury have put the trade in jeopardy.

As the Cavs try to squeeze more assets out of the Celtics, rumors have emerged that other teams may jump back into the mix for Irving.

Over on the SBNation Celtics Blog, writer Brad Rothstein lays out a theory that Minnesota Timberwolves star Andrew Wiggins may be the reason for the holdup.

Wiggins recently declined to sign a max contract offered to him by Minnesota, which Rothstein believes may mean that he wants out:

"1. Who turns down a max contract on a loaded roster?" the first point reads.

"2. Is there now hope Wiggins will demand a trade (not happy with the Butler acquisition)?

"3. There's no reason to jump the gun and finalize this Celtics deal if we can still swap Kyrie for a (debatable) equal talent in Wiggins, and NOT give our rival-Celtics our star player/Kyrie.

"4. We know Minnesota is a preferred destination for Kyrie, which makes it more than possible Minnesota is confident Kyrie will sign long-term with them and thus, make the T-wolves more than open to trading Wiggins for Kyrie (IF Wiggins wants out)."

That's an interesting (and unlikely) theory, but it's one that will only gain more steam the longer this trade impasse lasts.

Earlier this offseason, Minnesota owner Glen Taylor told the Star Tribune that he felt an extension with Wiggins would be easy to work out, but it's unclear where he stands on the below statements now:

“First of all, I think he likes it here, we like him, he can get the very best contract from me, better than he can get from anyone else,” Taylor said in July. “I don’t think we have any trouble of offering him the max anyway.”

Is Wiggins actually upset with the Jimmy Butler trade? He hasn't spoken out about it yet, but his reluctance to sign the max contract offered by the Timberwolves speaks volumes about what he's thinking right now.

It's still possible Wiggins will continue his career with the Timberwolves, but until the Irving trade is finalized, these rumors will only continue to grow stronger.
