Last weekend, we finally got to witness the fight that had been labelled by many across the world as the fight of the century.

After all that had gone before it, Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor finally settled their differences as they clashed in Las Vegas.

The Irishman went into the contest as a huge underdog; he was scheduled to fight one of the greatest boxers of all time, in a sport in which he had never fought a professional bout.

When the fight occurred on August 26, 'Notorious' seemed as if he could spring one of the greatest upsets in boxing history as he looked the more impressive fighter in the opening rounds.

However, as the rounds went on McGregor began to tire, and his American opponent capitalised on this as he was able to seize control of the bout, before emerging triumphant in the 10th round via TKO.

Nevertheless, it was a fantastic effort by the UFC star and despite his defeat, he can definitely be considered a winner.

Despite his loss, McGregor banked more than £77m and, as a result, has now leapfrogged above Cristiano Ronaldo on the Forbes rich list for athletes.

The list is calculated by adding together salaries, bonuses and endorsements, which include sponsorship's and appearance fees.

The £71 million that the Real Madrid star earned last year was enough to make him the highest paid athlete; but he has now tumbled down the list as a result of the super fight.

What McGregor said to Ronaldo

Interestingly, McGregor is said to have told Ronaldo that he will overtake him on the Forbes list in a meeting between the two last year.

The Dublin fighter said "You [Ronaldo] were number one on the Forbes list, I was like number 35 or something.

"I'll get up. Maybe next year I'll get you."

In response, Ronaldo replied "I don't think so."

However, despite staying true to his word and eclipsing Ronaldo on the money list, he is still some way off reaching top spot.

McGregor's opponent on Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather, earned a whopping £233m upon his return to the ring.

That is roughly £156m higher than the sum made by McGregor, making the Irishman's total look minuscule in comparison.

Nevertheless, it is safe to say that McGregor will be happy with the sheer amount of money that he earned for roughly 30 minutes in the ring; and at 29-years-old he has plenty of opportunities to earn even more money in the future.
